From State Representative 66 Elect Matt Shaheen:

Last week Texans were shocked to learn that a group of Houston pastors were subpoenaed by Houston Mayor Annise Parker to turn over sermons and other church communications. This unprecedented violation of religious liberty and free speech was a reaction to the pastors’ work to repeal a new city ordinance referred to as the “Bathroom Bill”.  This peculiar ordinance would allow men within the Houston city limits to put on a dress and then use a women’s public restroom.  Not surprisingly, this curious ordinance proved to be unpopular and these religious leaders were successful in collecting over 50,000 signatures for a referendum to repeal the law.

Over the past few days, I have talked with religious freedom organizations and legal counsel and have decided to introduce legislation during next session, that will impose criminal sanctions against city council members who subpoena religious leaders in a similar manner to that of the Houston Mayor.  If found guilty, the elected official could serve time in jail, pay a fine and be removed from office.

I am also calling for the resignation of Houston Mayor Annise Parker.  Her shameful actions were an abuse of power, trying to silence citizens who oppose her extreme views.  This type of attitude in a public official is a threat to the freedoms of all Texans and it follows a troubling pattern by liberal politicians who want to impose their extreme views by abusing the power of government.  This will not be tolerated in Texas.

Finally, I would ask that you stand with these pastors who have dedicated their lives to spreading the love, grace and mercy of Jesus Christ.  Join me in placing your name on the Texas Values petition using the link below where well over 10,000 Texans have already shown their support in a very short period of time. You can sign the petition from Texas Values to protect religious liberty here.

I am grateful to you and look forward to serving you as State Representative in the 84th Texas Legislature.

Regards,
Matt Shaheen
