THE WAY FORWARD
I am a Ted Cruz supporter because I support those underlying values he so clearly, forcefully and eloquently defends. So, as a Ted Cruz supporter, when he ran into the brick wall in Indiana on May 3, 2016, so did I.
As a result, when I was bombarded with requests for my opinion last night, I deferred, saying that I needed to pray and to think about it deeply. And I have – hence this letter.
The key to understanding the “Way Forward” is to fully appreciate the meaning of the phrase “Make America Great Again.”
While the media and Donald Trump himself focus on presenting “Make America Great Again” in terms of jobs, border protection, and care for the needy among us, the fact is that we know, as conservatives, that America can be made great again by implementing conservative principles. In fact, we know that the best methods to achieve the very things talked about – jobs, border protection, and care for the needy among us – are conservative ideas and programs, where government is limited and the people are empowered … as opposed to the other party, where people are limited while government expands to engulf them.
The fact is that we know, as conservatives, that America can be made great again by implementing conservative principles.
So the truth is that the mantra “Make America Great Again” can and should fully embrace our conservative principles in order to truly make America great again. Since Donald Trump wants to do things which work, with our help, support, encouragement, and influence, I believe he will use these principles to make American Great Again!
And so, because I support conservative principles and those principles will make America great again, I support the standard bearer for that slogan “Make America Great Again,” Donald Trump. And, to do that, I will be begin my support by offering the future President Trump some ideas:
- To reduce the size of government and start slicing and dicing regulations and the bloated bureaucracy, appoint Carly Fiorina as the “Government Reduction Czar.” After all, she took on another bureaucracy called Hewlett Packard and wrestled it to the ground.
- To begin the process of recovering our Constitution, appoint Ted Cruz as our next Justice of the United States Supreme Court. After he is approved by the Senate, start lining up other strong constitutional conservatives for the next two positions which will come open during your administration.
- To bring our expenses and our income into alignment, insist that Congress pass a Constitutional Amendment to balance the budget and fast track its approval through the necessary number of states for its ratification.
- Erase Obamacare from the face of the earth and replace it with free market group insurance alternatives, a method for providing primary care services (perhaps through nurse practitioners with prescriptive authority) to people who cannot afford it, and a mechanism whereby people who pay cash can get the same discount which insurance companies get. Appoint Ben Carson to get this done.
- Control the borders. Control the borders. Control the borders.
If we do these things (plus some others I am sure you can add to the list), we (and Donald Trump) will “Make America Great Again.”
So, I support Donald Trump because he and I have the same objective, to “Make America Great Again.”
But I also support Donald Trump for another reason, and that is that he is teaching us an old concept, which we need to re-learn. And that is how to fight. When the enemy is at the door, when the government establishment has become bloated almost beyond repair, when our constitution is routinely ignored, when life, liberty, and property are in jeopardy, it is not time to play nice, it is not time to make everyone our friends, it is not time to even play fair … it is time to win.
What Donald Trump is teaching us in his pugilistic, antagonistic, and rough manner is that there is a time to govern and a time to win. There is a time to be nice and a time to win. Republicans have been so ready to be nice, so ready to govern fairly, so ready to shake hands across the aisle that we have forgotten that the other side does not play by those rules and the other side fights the long fight to win…and they have been winning. Donald Trump is not so ready to be nice, not so ready to be fair, not so ready to shake hands across the aisle that he has forgotten who the enemy is. Donald Trump is a fighter, a gladiator, a warrior, who intends to beat the nonsense out of those people who would make America poor and weak, and who would deprive us of our liberty and our property.
Donald Trump does not apologize and neither should we. Donald Trump fights for what he sees as the right and so should we. There may be a time in the future, if he abandons conservative principles in building his programs to make America great again, when we may need to fight against him…but that time is not now. For now, for the sake of America and for our children and grandchildren and great grandchildren, we must fight with him and for him and for us.
In this fight to take place in November, 2016, there will be a winner and a loser and not everyone will get a trophy. I for one intend to be on the winning side. I invite you to join me and support Donald Trump.
Sincerely yours,
George B. Flint
